KIRIL Profile @ MDP - www.mdpclub.com

When the words "ground-breaking electronic musician" are mentioned, a Macedonian name is not usually the first to come to mind. However, there is a definite lack of knowledge in that respect. Because, in the heart of a country engulfed in terrorism and ethnic battles, there shines a true "ground-breaking" musician: Kiril Dzajkovski.

Macedonian musical exposure to the West is usually limited to the folk likes of Vojo Stojanovski, the pop-influenced dance sounds of Skopje, and countless remakes of 'Golema Svadba". Kiril, on the other hand, leads a unique new brand of music coming from the former-Yugoslav republic. His blend of drum & bass, electronica, and ethno-folk music create a truly beautiful and mesmerizing sound unlike any other. In fact, listening to his most recent cd will leave you weeping at times and dancing around at others; it's just that powerful.

Kiril's musical endeavors began in the eighties in Macedonia. He experimented with musical styles with his bandmate, director Milcho Manchevski, in their band Bastion. He also worked alongside Leb i Sol. In the mid-nineties, he produced his first album mixing ethnic and electronic sounds. Kiril, although not as well known in the US, is extremely admired among the Macedonian communities in Australia as well as in his home country. His US exposure has been limited to a few after-hours radio shows (a few plays of his record at best) in places like Indiana, New York, and Detroit (89X has played Kiril). He has worked on soundtracks (Dust) which have also given him some exposure. Back in Macedonia and the rest of former Yugoslavia, he has preformed at and put on countless numbers of festivals, concerts, plays and productions. His music has even reached Ford and Mastercard commercials. In fact, among the former Yugoslavs, he is held on the same platform as Moby and John Williams (producer of many famous film scores).

All this gives Kiril more and more phone calls for collaborations as the days go by. He's worked with Bushwacka on a remix of "Primitive Science". He has worked with director Milcho Manchevski on several projects. His concerts in Australia has left fans in a state of trancey hypnotism. He has even ventured into producing scores for theatre (Drakula). It is safe to assume that Kiril's resume is in no way short.

Kiril has led a sort of "underground to mainstream" explosion from the Yugoslavs. Because of his breakthrough into mainstream, other artists have followed or been given a chance. Electronic music has seen artists such as Tripnotic, MaYa MoUsE, and Duke Bojadziev come to the forefront. Hip hop has SAF making an impact. Anastasia has broken through with their "Before the Rain" soundtrack work. Even indie group Lost Expedition has seen a recent revival in its hard rock record sales.

Thankfully for us, Kiril won't be slowing down anytime soon. He has a full plate of projects in the next couple of years (a new cd coming soon?) to keep us entertained and enlightened.
